Every month, on the 15th, Ranjeet Kumar calls home.
He’s been doing it for eleven years — first from a payphone in Sharjah, now from WhatsApp in a labor camp outside Muscat. The call lasts maybe eight minutes. His mother asks if he’s eating. His wife tells him about the school fees. His youngest son, who was three when Ranjeet left, speaks to him in a voice that gets deeper every year. Then Ranjeet hangs up, opens his money transfer app, and sends ₹18,000 home to Araria district.
